AAMW Directors' letter published in BMJ
Following media coverage of Dr Foster's case notes on adverse events in English hospitals, the BMJ published a letter from David Dickinson, Melinda Letts and Joanne Shaw on the advantages in safety terms of patients being involved as partners in prescribing decisions.
A Day Out for Ask About Medicines at the RCP Open Day

Ask About Medicines made a public appearance at this year’s Royal College of Physicians Open Day, held on Saturday 8 July 2006. The event was designed to allow the public a look inside the RCP buildings, explain more about medicine to the general public and encourage students to consider a career in medicine.

The Ask About Medicines team were invited to exhibit at the Open Day and explain how asking questions about medicines helps the public to make informed choices about taking medicines. Visitors to the stand were able to learn more about Ask About Medicines Week activities, seeing the successes from 2005’s awareness week, and picking up leaflets such as Ask About Complementary Medicines and the Health and Medicines Information Guide and Directory.

We received support to attend the event from Datapharm, makers of the medicines information portal www.medicines.org, and the Ask About Medicines team were able to show visitors how to access medicines information using the site.

Over 500 people visited the Open Day and 50 visitors completed a short (but tricky) Ask About Medicines quiz. A successful event ensured that visitors to the RCP Open Day went away enthused to ask questions about their medicines and anticipating Ask About Medicines Week 2006.
